Cambodia’s social structure has been seriously undermined by wars and other disturbances throughout decades. Corruption and a weak legislation have created a situation where trading with children easily grow. Nearly 90% of the population are farmers living in the countryside, suffering by poverty. Most families have many children who are looked upon as cheap labour as the families are trying to survive.

There are few possibilities for educational training and only 15% of the children finish public school. Since the schools often are far away from the villages, the level of education is low and the school books are expensive, many parents might find it more important that the children participate in the farm work instead of going to school – especially when it is time to harvest.

The situation of the children gets even worse if the family gets in debt. Since the family income often is seasonal they are often forced to borrow money at a high interest to overcome the hard times. This situation can force the families to participate in the trading with children if paying back the loan is impossible.
